The third round of the Sussex Cross Country league saw the Blue Stars travel to Lancing, where the dry underfoot conditions and mild weather meant that it was ideal for cross country running.
Once again the Senior ladies team dominated their event finishing four athletes in the first ten, meaning that they cemented their hold on the Division 2 title. Johanna Spannagl, who continues to impress on her comeback to the sport, led the team home. Spannagl led from the start and proceeded to draw further away from the opposition to win by over
40 seconds, running 18m12s for the 5km course. Annabel Morton had her best run of the winter finishing in an excellent 3rd place (18m58s) and was also the first Under 17 Woman. Elspeth Turner in sixth place (19m28s) and Alex Richer (19m51s) in tenth meant the Club easily won the team event. Clare Richer, in her first run for the club, finished 36th (21m12s), and Daisy Burchfield 48th (22m13s) also had a good runs.
In the Under 17 Men’s race, also run over 5km, Luke Burgess had a good run to take fourth place, running 16m41s and with Jacob Cann 12th (17m37s) and Bradley Burke 16th (17m53s) the team finished 3rd on the day, but maintained their second position in the league overall. The Under 15 Boys race saw Ash Williams lead the Club home, with another good run, taking fourth place after a sprint finish, running 16m39s for the 4.5km course., and with Matty Smith in 14th (17m20s) and Tom Clark 39th (19m25s) the team finished 6th on the day, but retain 5th position overall.
Izzy Hayes finished a creditable eighth in the Under 15 Girls race, covering the 4km race in 17m03s, and in the Under 13 Boys race, where 11 Blue Stars toed the line, Charlie Ferris led the team home coming in 14th in 11m28s and with Jesse Mackarel, having his first run for the Club, running well to finish 26th (12m00s) and Ryan Rothe 28th (12m09s) the team finished 8th. Reuben Marsden finished 30th (12m12s), James Andrews 32nd (12m17s) and Luke Bull 42nd (12m45s) gave the B team a 12th place finish. Sophie Morris and Olivia Sharp had a personal tussle in the Under 13 Girls race, with the former just edging out her club mate, running 12m50s and 12m51s respectively, and with Jasmine Tamblin in 35th (13m51s) the team took 7th position. The Senior Men’s event run over 8km saw a welcome return to racing for Francis Scarr, who was the first Blue Star finisher taking 26th position running 32m08s, a good run in a field of over 150 runners, with Luke Triccas 62nd (34m30s).
