The first of this winter’s Sussex Cross Country league events took place at Stanmer Park, Brighton and saw a record number of competitors, with over 700 athletes competing across the various age groups. There were some good performances by Blue Star athletes, with good individual and team results.
The Under 13 Boys race, run over 3km, saw over 80 athletes compete, with Charlie Ferris having an excellent run. Always up with the leading group he finished in 6th place (12m07s) and with Reuben Marsden, having another good run in 12th (12m21s) and Ryan Rothe in 22nd (12m57s) the team finished in 3rd place of the 31 competing teams. The B team of Dominic Barber 37th (13m24s), James Andrews 42nd (13m40s) and Isaac Burt 58th (14m17s) finished in 15th.
The Under 15 races run over 4km saw a great run from Izzie Hayes in the Girls race, where she finished in an excellent 3rd place, running 16m32s. Sophie Morris also ran well to take 12th place (17m37s), with the team finishing in 5th position. Sam Richards led the Under 15 Boys team home in 11th place, running 15m27s for the 4km race, and with Jesse Mackarel 27th (16m32s) and Tom Clark 38th (17m23s) the team took 8th place. In the Under 17 Men’s race, run over 5km, Ashley Williams, returning from injury, finished 10th in 20m45s.
The Under 17, Under 20 and Senior Women all run together over 5km and was contested by over 150 competitors. Annabel Morton finished in an excellent 3rd place overall, running 21m56s, and finished as second Under 20 Woman. She was closely followed by club mate Alex Richer, who had another good run to finish 4th (22m11s) overall, but was the first Under 17 Woman to finish. With Debbie Morton 103rd (28m50s) and Miranda Huisman 106th (28m53s) the team finished in 8th place.
The biggest field of the day lined up for the Senior Men’s race, run over 8km, with over 230 competing, Bradley Burke, in his first season in this age group, led the team home in an excellent 22nd place running 33m10s. He was closely followed by Luke Burgess in 24th (33m21s) and with Harry Eaton 33rd (34m09s) and Josh Barnett 38th (34m26s) the team were just edged into second place in their Division by one point, scoring 116 points, to winners Eastbourne’s 115 points.
The day started off with races for Under 11s, run over 2km, and in the Girls race Emily Olliver finished a creditable 16th (9m39s), with Eryn Crowhurst finishing 23rd (10m21s).
