The first of this winter’s Sussex Sportshall leagues took place at Tanbridge School and saw close matches in both the Girls and Boys competitions. The Blue Star Girls team came out on top in a tense match scoring 222 points to finish ahead of Brighton in (212points), Crawley (204 points), Chichester (106) and Haywards Heath (91), whilst in the Boys match the Blue Star team scored 190 points to finish 3rd, behind winners Brighton (222 points) and Crawley (211), with Chichester 4th (109) and Haywards Heath 5th (80).
In the Under 15 Girls events Ella Hannyngton and Cleo Tomlinson teamed up in the Shot competition and both won their respective events, with Ella throwing 7.87m to win the A string and Cleo 7.73m to win the B event. Hannyngton then went on to take second place in the A string Standing Long Jump with a leap of 2.26m, with Jess O’Flaherty winning the B string with 2.25m. O’Flaherty and Tomlinson competed in the 4 lap race with Tomlinson running 47.4s to take second place in the A race with O’Flaherty winning the B race in 49.4s. The 2 lap races saw Hannyngton and Collette Tierney both take second places, running 23.0s and 23.6s respectively. The 4 x 2 lap relay saw the team of Tierney, O’Flaherty, Tomlinson and Hannyngton dominating the event from the first leg to run out easy winners in 1m29.3s.
The Under 13 Girls events saw second places from Ella Heather and Hayley Emerson in the Speed Bounce events with Heather also taking another second place in the 2 lap race where she ran 23.4s. Other second places came in the A string Standing Long Jump, where Sophie Hogton leapt 2.05m, in the Shot Putt with Macy Lawes (7.26m) and Alina Hillicks (6.48m), the Vertical Jump with Millie Martin in the A string (54cm) and Lawes in the B event (51cm) and in the 4 lap race where Emily Hutchinson ran 51.8s in the A race and Lucy Costello ran 53.9s in the B race.
The under 11 Girls events saw impressive wins for Madeleine Way in all her three events, running 23.5s in the 2 lap race, then leaping 2.07m in the Standing Long Jump, where Kyla Ball won the B event with 2.02m, and finally scoring 55 bounces to take the Speed Bounce event, with Ball winning the B event with a score of 45.
In the Under 15 Boys events Adam West threw an impressive 9.53m to win the Shot Putt having earlier jumped 2.51m to win the Standing Long Jump, where team mate John Fickling won the B event with a leap of 2.48m. The Speed Bounce saw Callum Palmer take second place in the A event with a score of 73, with Fickling winning the B event with a score of 72. Edward Crossman won the Under 13 Boys Vertical Jump with a leap of 50cm and then took second place in the Standing Long Jump with 2.24m, having earlier taken second place in the 4 lap race in 50.8s, with Callum Stone running 51.7s for second place in the B race. Craig Harris also gained two second places, firstly in the 2 lap race, where he ran 23.3s and then in the Shot (6.23m). Theo Ramage and Lauchlan Slaughter teamed up in the Under 11 Boys 2 lap races, both finishing in second place, running 24.8s and 24.5s respectively.
