Hampstead Heath was the venue for this year’s Southern Cross Country Championships, where the races run over a tough course were contested by large fields across all the age groups and the Blue Star competitors put up some excellent performances. The first race for the under 15 Boys, with 300 runners toeing the line, saw Matty Smith finish in 16th place running 15m54s for the 4.5km course. The Under 13 Boys race, run over 3km saw a good run by Charlie Ferris, who was always in the leading group, finishing in 28th position out of 330, to be the leading Sussex athlete. In the Under 17 Men’s race Ash Williams struggled over the final part of the 6km course and finished in 65th position in 23m41s.
The Under 20 Women, running over 6km, were next up and Annabel Morton came home in 18th position, running 25m38s. Alex Richer had another good run in the under 17 Women’s race to finish in an excellent 13th position to again be the leading Sussex athlete, running 20m00s for the 5km race.
Luke Burgess ran well in the Under 20 Men’s race, run over 8km, to finish in 18th position (26m49s). He was closely followed in by Jacob Cann in 23rd position (27m07s) and with Bradley Burke 53rd (28m03s) and Josh Barnett 54th (28m05s) the team finished just outside the medals by just 8 points in 4th position. The highest team placing achieved by any Sussex Club on the day.
