The Blue Star Senior team made the trip to Winchester for the latest of their Southern Athletic League fixtures and a good all round team performance saw them run out easy winners scoring 239 points, with Worthing (136 points) 2nd, Exeter (81 points) 3rd and Fleet & Crookham (21 points) 4th.
The day started off with a double win in the men’s 400m Hurdles, where Jack Milnthorpe ran 65.8s to win the A race and Gareth Lewis won the B race in 72.3s. Milnthorpe then went on to win the High Jump with a clearance of 1.75m, with team mate Sean Carter clearing 1.65m to win the B event. Carter and Lewis teamed up in the Pole Vault and produced another double first with Carter clearing 3.40m in the A event and Lewis winning the B string with 3.00m. The Men’s 110m Hurdles saw Lewis run 18.4s to win the A race with Milnthorpe taking the B race in 19.5s. There was a good win for Luke Johnson in the Men’s Javelin where he threw an impressive 52.06m, and elsewhere on the field the Long Jump saw Alex Wadley and Tom Gilsenan-Best gain a double first jumping 6.18m and 5.78m respectively.
On the track Ash Williams was a convincing winner of the 800m, running 2m08.0s in the race with Josh Barnett winning the B race in 2m09.3s. Bradley Burke impressed in the 2000m Steeplechase where he recorded 6m44.5s to win the A race, with Jonathan Arnold running 7m35.1s to win the B race.
The Women’s events saw a good run by Elspeth Turner in the 3000m, and although edged into second place she ran an impressive 10m38.3s, the fastest time run by a Blue Star woman for over 5 years.
The Triple Jump saw Ella Sharpe jump 9.65m to win the A event with Maddie Povey winning the B string with 8.55m. Lucy Milnthorpe won the High Jump with a clearance of 1.45m and then went on to throw 21.45m to win the Javelin, and there were double wins for Liz Hutchinson and Anne Billingham in the Hammer and Long Jump events.
The final relay events saw the Men’s 4x100m team of Tom Gilsenan-Best, Adam West, Alex Wadley and James Hedges just prevail over the team from Worthing, running 46.1s, whilst the 4x400m team of Bradley Burke, Josh Barnett, Luke Johnson and James Hedges ran out winners in 4m05.3s. The Women’s 4x100m team of Melanie Bradley, Maddie Povey, Liz Hutchinson and Ella Sharpe ran 57.3s to finish second. This result will move the Club up two places in the table where they now lie 8th.
