Unseasonally warm weather greeted the runners for the first of this winter’s Sussex Cross Country league fixtures held adjacent to Goodwood racecourse. The Blue Stars had a good turnout with the highlight of the day coming in the Senior Women’s race, run over a distance of 3 miles, where over 120 runners faced the starter.

Leading from the start Johanna Spannagl took an early lead which she held until 800m from the finish when she was joined and overtaken,

but she then strode away again over the final 200m to come home to record an impressive victory. Alex Richer had her best ever run in this race taking 4th and with Annabel Morton taking 8th the team ran out easy winners in Division 2.


The Senior Men’s race run over a tough 5 miles saw Bernie Spannagl almost emulate his elder sister where he put in another excellent performance to finish 2nd out of a massive field of 160 runners, running 25m19s for the distance. Jonathan Arnold 48th (29m44s), Luke Triccas 54th (30m12s), Andy Dunstan 61st (30m33s), Bill Knight 76th (31m37s) and David Maclean 99th (33m38s) made up the team that took 7th place in Division 1.


Ash Williams finished second in the Under 15 Boys race

The Under 15 Boys race saw Ash Williams and Matty Smith always up in the leading group and both had good runs, with Williams finishing strongly to take second place, running 14m52s for the 2.5 miles race, and Smith taking 5th place in 15m02s. They were supported by Sam Richards who finished in 35th position (17m07s) giving the teama 5th place finish. The B team of Ollie Arnold 48th (17m52s), Charlie Beckley 49th (18m15s) and Hari Brogan 52nd (18m49s) finished in 17th place. The Under 17 Men’s race run over 3 miles saw the team finished in second place just 1 point behind the winners Brighton & Hove, with Luke Burgess leading theteam home in 5th place (16m06s) followed by Bradley Burke 8th (16m41s) and Josh Barnett 14th (17m08s).


The Under 13 Boys and Under 13 Girls Races were both run over 1.8 miles, with Charlie Ferris finishing highest of the eight Blue Star boys competing, finishing 17th (11m47s) out of a big field of 76 Boys, with Ryan Rothe 36th (12m41s) and Reuben Marsden 40th (12m46s), giving the team an 8th place finish. The Under 13 Girls were led home by Emmie Burkinshaw in 18th place (13m27s), with Olivia Sharpe 23rd (13m35s) and Sophie Morris 28th (13m52s) the team finished eighth.
